Teenage years harder for twins and triplets

Start – Press Release

Teenage years harder for twins and triplets

“As far as most people are concerned, you and your twin are a unit. Like fish and chips, apparently, you can’t have one without the other.”

“My twin sister is a best friend, a fellow rebel, and a perfectly honest critic, all rolled into one. There is no way I could ever do without her. “

Extract from: On being a twin, by Holly Fraser.

“Transitioning from child to young adult is a hard work; kids are searching for ways to become independent from their parents and to forge their own path in life. It can be even more challenging for teenage twins and triplets. Dr Eileen Pearlman, founder of TwInsight in the US, makes the point that not only do twins and triplets have to separate from their parents, they also have to separate from each other. As parents, we need to support this transition and embrace the process our children are going through to become healthy independent individuals.”

Ainslee Jacobson, President, Multiples NZ.

Multiples NZ hosted a Young Writers Competition giving twin and triplet teens the opportunity to examine the complexities and changes in their lives as they become independent adults who also have a unique relationship and bond with their siblings.

Winner: Holly Fraser, On being a twin. Runners up: Kaylee Cannell and Morgan Burt.

Multiples Awareness week starts on 6 November and runs to Saturday 12 November. This year the Multiples NZ and Multiple Birth Clubs nationwide will be focusing on by “Celebrating and empowering adolescence in multiples”.
