Update On The Future Of Ako Aotearoa

The Government’s decision in May this year to cease funding of Ako Aotearoa - the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence - has resulted in the disestablishment of all staff roles at Ako Aotearoa, by 31 December 2025.

The Centre’s host – Massey University – advised all staff last Tuesday (1 October) of the outcome of the Proposal for Change process, and subsequently met with them on Friday to discuss the impact of that outcome.

Massey University Provost, Professor Giselle Byrnes, advises that any agency or party wishing to assume responsibility for the ‘Ako Aotearoa’ brand can reach out to discuss this with her prior to 31 December 2025. That would mean the brand and/or Centre itself could continue to operate under a new hosting arrangement.

“Ako Aotearoa’s work with the sector, and its legacy of resources and initiatives needs to continue to be available. I welcome conversations with people who are genuinely looking to help sustain the Centre’s future.”

However, Professor Byrnes adds that, if there is no such approach, then Ako Aotearoa, as we now know it, would no longer exist (the staffing, the brand and/or the Centre).
