STATEMENT BY SIR JOHN JEFFRIES

Sir John Jeffries, chairman of the Press Council, said that the Press Council at its most recent meeting considered the two complaints that it had received in respect of the Craccum article on suicide.

Sir John restated that the policy of the Press Council is to restrict its jurisdiction in complaint resoultion to main stream print publications and not to accept any complaints concerning publications with a specialised readership.

However the Council decided that in view of the special circumstances surrounding the Craccum article, and in particular that it had received widespread coverage in the mainstream press, and other media, that it was prepared to make an exception to its policy and receive and adjudicate on the complaints.

Sir John said it was most important that the public appreciate that the only decision of the Council at this point is to accept the complaints for resolution that does not carry with any implication whatsoever as to the final outcome of the complaints. That will be decided by the full Council after the completion of its normal procedures for complaints.
