LTSA gives motorists school holiday homework

With school holidays beginning this week the Land Transport Safety Authority is reminding motorists to do their homework before getting out on the road.

“We want people to make sure their vehicle is in a safe condition before they drive off on a family vacation,” the Director of Land Transport Safety Reg Barrett said today.

“It’s a good idea to get a safety check done, and at the very least your vehicle should be up to Warrant of Fitness standard.”

“One of the most important things to look at is the condition of your tyres – and that includes the spare. Make sure there is sufficient even tread on the tyres and that they are inflated to the correct pressure. Driving on worn tyres is just asking for trouble, particularly when roads can be slippery at this time of year,” Mr Barrett said.

Checking that the vehicle’s load is safely restrained was also emphasised.

“Try and put items like cases, chilly bins and camping equipment in the boot and restrain them with rope or luggage straps if possible. You can also thread a seatbelt through handles or straps and then fasten it if you must carry luggage inside the passenger compartment. Remember even a small object can become a dangerous projectile if you brake suddenly or are in a crash.”

Drivers were reminded not to forget their driver licence while on holiday, as carrying it at all times when driving is mandatory. Anyone caught driving without their licence is liable for a $55.00 instant fine.

Mr Barrett asked motorists to keep alert for children when driving. “During the holidays there are likely to be young pedestrians and cyclists on the road at times when they would normally be at school. Drivers need to be particularly cautious around areas like parks and popular vacation spots. We want the school holidays to be a time of fun and not a time of tragedy,” he said.
