Driver Committed For Trial Over Picket Death
Christchurch, June 7 - A man accused of causing the death of a woman on a picket line at the Port of Lyttelton has been committed for trial after a two-day depositions hearing.
Derek Paul Powell, 52, company manager, is charged with causing the death of Christine Clarke, 45, by dangerous driving last December 29.
Justices of the Peace Carolyne Kellaway and Dennis Rich ruled in Christchurch District Court today that Powell had a prima facie case to answer.
He was remanded on bail to July 25 for a pre-trial conference.
Ms Clarke, a mother of two, died from brain injuries two days after allegedly being run over on the picket line by a four-wheel-drive vehicle driven by Powell, during an industrial confrontation at the port between union members and the Lyttelton Port Company.
