October road toll second-lowest

The provisional national road toll for October stands at 34 – the second-lowest figure recorded for the month since current records began in 1965, the Land Transport Safety Authority said today.

The toll is an increase of eight on the record low recorded in October last year. The year-to-date road toll for 2001 now stands at 364, compared to 371 at this time last year and 424 in 1999.

Sixty-six of the 286 vehicle occupants killed so far this year were not wearing safety belts - police estimate that at least 26 would have survived had they been properly restrained.

In the 12 months to the end of October there have been 455 deaths on New Zealand roads, the same as the 12 monthly toll to the end of October 2000. Last year’s annual road toll of 462 was the lowest since 1964.
