Children’s Day Leap-frogs into 2002

The Commissioner for Children and the heads of Barnardos, Child, Youth and Family and Save the Children are joining forces this Thursday 20 June to launch the third national Children’s Day to be held on Sunday 27 October.

There will be cake eating and leap –frogging with children from Mount Cook school at the launch to be held at Wellington Zoo.

Children’s Day 2002 will be the third time the annual event has been held. Communities throughout the country have organised events to celebrate children in each of the past two years.

Media are warmly invited to attend the launch at the Zoo’s education room from 10:00am -11:00am on Thursday.

There will be plenty of photo and filming opportunities. Children will make balloon animals, under the instruction of magician Nigel Kennedy.

They’ll be joined by Children’s Commissioner Roger McClay, Child, Youth and Family Chief Executive Jackie Pivac, Barnardos Chief Executive Ian Calder and Save the Children’s Chief Executive John Bowis.

Children will speak about why Children’s Day is important and present poster designs on the themes of what babies (human and animals) need to grow to be healthy.

The key message being promoted for Children’s Day 2002 is:“Children need new experiences – get out and do things together.”

The overall aim of Children’s Day is to celebrate our children and to encourage adults to give time to their children.
