Creative Pukekohe Kids Win A Night On Famine Island
Thirty-two Pukekohe Intermediate School Year 7 and 8 students have won a national creative competition and will spend a night on 'Just Juice Famine Island' to participate in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine.
The class was among more than 1000 Year 7 and 8 students around the country who have been busy putting their creativity to good use over the past two months.
The Just Juice Famine Island project was designed in conjunction with World Vision as a creative and educational exercise to get students interested in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine and create an awareness of its important messages.
Students had until Friday February 28 to construct an island and take a photograph of their creation to send in for judging. As part of the programme photographs were posted on the Just Juice website where members of the public could vote for their favourite island.
The winning Pukekohe Intermediate students will experience an adventurous Famine weekend (March 22 - 23, 2003) on 'Just Juice Famine Island' (Motuihe Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf) where they will participate in a number of survivor-style, fun activities.
Just Juice brand manager Kate Esquilant was delighted with the response from schools around the country.
"It's an experience of a lifetime for the kids. During the weekend they'll learn a bit about what it's like for people who live in poverty in third world countries. It's also going to be a lot of fun," she says.
