College of GPs supports ‘beginning’ to change

The College of GPs welcomes, as a “beginning point for change”, the re-drafting of New Zealand First MP Brian Donnelly’s Bill aimed at reducing violence towards children.

Mr Donnelly redrafted the Bill after advice from Whangarei GP Dr Shane Reti, who produced research showing New Zealanders would support legislation that prevented adults from using force to a child’s head, or the use of any object to hit a child.

Blenheim GP Dr Jim Vause, president of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, said the College had welcomed Dr Reti’s findings when first released, and was happy the results would be reflected in the re-drafted Private Member’s Bill as a “beginning point for change.”
