Recall – Plastic bottles of Wattie’s Steak Sauce

February 9, 2004

MEDIA RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Recall – All plastic bottles of Wattie’s Steak Sauce

Precautionary Measure Only

Wattie’s has announced it is voluntarily recalling its Wattie’s Steak Sauce, 560 gram plastic bottle. This recall does not affect any other Wattie’s sauces.

“We are voluntarily recalling this sauce as a precautionary measure because of an undeclared allergen. Our audit system has confirmed the presence of an undeclared peanut ingredient in the sauce, which is not indicated on the label. Although this is at an extremely low level, it is still a potential risk to those consumers who have an allergy to peanuts or nuts. To date there have been no reports of any adverse reactions,” said Nigel Comer, Managing Director.

Mr Comer said although peanuts were NOT an ingredient of the product,
traces had found their way into the product through cross contamination of an ingredient used in the manufacturing process.

“Anyone who has bought Wattie’s Steak Sauce 560 gram bottle should return the bottle to the store from which it was purchased, for the choice of a full refund or replacement with another 560 gram Wattie’s sauce.

“Wattie Steak Sauce 560 gram plastic bottle is not an issue to anyone without a peanut allergy.

“We apologise to our customers for this problem, and for the inconvenience of the recall, and thank them for their co-operation,” Mr Comer said.

Consumers who have any queries about the recall can call:

0800 653 050.
