NZMJ to host course for Medical Editors

The New Zealand Medical Journal is hosting a two-day course designed to help doctors and other health professionals develop their skills as editors of journals.

The course, which is co-sponsored by the British Medical Association and Blackwell Publishing Asia, will take place at the Christchurch School of Medicine on August 5-6.

The course has been successfully run in England, Ethiopia and Sweden, but this is the first time it has been held in the southern hemisphere.

‘Many health professionals at some time in their careers are called upon to be editors,’ says Tim Albert, director of the course. ‘It is an important and time-consuming task, but there are few opportunities for them to have any formal training in this area.

‘We are delighted to have been given this opportunity and hope that many doctors in the region will take the opportunity to come’.

The course covers a range of skills, such as making the best use of electronic publishing, ensuring that copy is readable, attracting good articles and dealing with fraud.

At around the same time Tim Albert, who is based in London, will also be running courses at various academic institutions in New Zealand designed to show medical professionals how to get their research written - and published. Full details of the courses are available on www.timalbert.co.uk.
