New CEO for the College
The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners has appointed Karen Thomas as chief executive. The former Manager, Government Services for the Department of Child, Youth and Family, takes over the role on 25 January 2005. A trained clinical psychologist, Ms Thomas has also worked in the Probation Service and at the State Services Commission.
Ms Thomas, who replaces Claire Austin who left last month to head The Families Commission, is looking forward to the challenges of working in the stimulating and increasingly vital area of primary health care. The College of GPs provides advocacy and support for GPs, delivering post-graduate education, professional development and quality standards programmes aimed at supporting and strengthening general practice. The CEO heads a Wellington-based office of 30 staff.
