Off Duty Policeman Raises Alarm for Sick Mountain Biker
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter rescued a sick mountain biker near Upper Hutt late this afternoon.
The 47 year old Upper Hutt man believed he was suffering from a heart attack during a ride near the Rimutaka Summit.
An off duty police officer came across the man and then biked about six kilometres to get a cellphone signal and raised the alarm.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, located the sick man about 5:30 pm. The helicopter was able to land nearby and the man was transported to Wellington Hospital in a stable condition.
"It appears he was suffering from some sort of cardiac event" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman John Goldswain.
The man is currently in the Wellington Emergency Department being treated and assessed.
The off duty policeman was from out of the Wellington area.
