ACC Launches Initiatives for the Deaf in Sign Language Week
The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) has introduced a series of changes designed to help Deaf people access its service when they suffer an injury.
“ACC is making it easier for injured people to get the help they need. To do this people have to know what’s available, it has to be easy for them to get and our staff should understand any particular needs they may have”, said Dr Jan White, ACC Chief Executive.
“Sign Language Week seemed an appropriate time to launch four initiatives that will address all of these areas for Deaf people. The initiatives are:
1. an information DVD for
the Deaf about ACC and the services it offers
2. a
dedicated fax line for Deaf people
3. a dedicated email
address for Deaf people
4. an e-learning module for staff
“Communicating with our Deaf claimants”
“The Deaf community welcomes these types of initiatives, which will make it easier to access ACC services. Our hope is that other agencies will follow this lead”, said Deaf Association Chief Executive Rachel Noble.
