Good Start In Redressing GP Workforce Deficiencies

A promising start to redressing GP workforce deficiencies
The NZ Rural General Practice Network welcomes the Health Minister's announcement today to increase the number of funded places in the GP Vocational Training Programme from 69 this year to 104 next year.
The Network believes this is a significant step in addressing some of the key issues faced by the rural general practice workforce, in particular the difficulties associated with recruiting and retaining GPs. While there may be some capacity and resourcing challenges to meet the needs of these extra trainees, the Network acknowledges this move is a promising start to redressing workforce deficiencies.
The Network looks forward to working with the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners to make this initiative a reality for our rural general practitioners working on the ground in our communities.
