HBDHB wins TUANZ Education Award

The Incubator health careers programme developed by the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board won last night’s Education Award at the TUANZ Innovation Awards

The Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand Awards (TUANZ) recognise industry leaders in the information technology industry.

Judges comments recognised Incubator as a unique programme that delivered a distinctive mix of smart media applications to senior secondary school students that had a wow factor.
The programme encompassed adult learning, coaching and ICT methodologies with health literacy as a focus, judges said.

Project Managers Wynn Schollum and Robert Bull, who developed the programme for the DHB, said the award recognised Incubator as a leader amongst other district health boards in education and learning.

Incubator is designed to forge links between students and the health sector by using all aspects of digital strategies that enlighten them on career opportunities in health and also give them personal wellbeing information, Mr Schollum said.

“We now have an award that gives the programme industry recognition which will boost our ability to market the programme,” he said.

The programme has been a hit for the Hawke’s Bay DHB with other DHBs wanting to purchase the programme. It is currently being used in Auckland, Gisborne and Greymouth. With further DHB’s planning to use it in 2009.

Four schools in Hawke’s Bay including Flaxmere College use the programme which introduces health professionals, health literacy, information and realism to students so they can appreciate the career choices available in the health sector and help encourage them to consider tertiary education.

Incubator is also up for award at the Health Innovation Awards in November after being announced as one of the 19 finalists.
