Frozen Vegies Just As Good As Fresh
Fresh fruit and vegetables are cheap and plentiful throughout the Waikato during summer but frozen and tinned options can be just as healthy.
They're also easy to store, always on hand and are processed soon after picking so retain all their nutrients.
Health Eating Healthy Action project director Janet Hanvey said frozen or canned vegetables and fruit are a cost effective, quick and easy way of feeding the family.
"Many families are busy and don't always have a lot of time on their hands for preparing fresh vegetables or fruit.
"Using frozen or canned options are a convenient way to help keep your family healthy when you don't have a lot of time to prepare a meal.
"They're also good value for money with reasonable prices from the supermarket with minimum waste," she said.
Frozen vegetables do not need to be thawed and can be cooked straight out of the freezer. Reheat canned vegetables on a low heat if you are serving them hot. You can freeze or refrigerate left-over canned food if you take it out of the can and put it in an airtight container.
