Waikato Hospital patient updates
Waikato Hospital is getting lots of media requests to speak to the families of the children in our hospital from the fatal car accident north of Taupo.
Denise Pie, mother of Kirstin-Leigh Pie, 11, wishes to correct some misinformation. Her husband Peter Pie was 42 not 40.
She asked me to release the following statement.
"I'd just like to say that I'm terribly, terribly sorry for what happened. My deepest sympathies go out to the families involved.
"I'd like to thank the off duty policeman. What he did was so, so courageous. To everyone else involved, I just want to say thank you." Mrs Pie, of Auckland, said Kirstin-Leigh keeps asking about how the other children involved in the accident are even though she herself is in pain and grieving the loss of her much-loved father. Mrs Pie wants to concentrate on her daughter's recovery and prefers to make no further comment.
Kirstin-Leigh is in a children's ward at Waikato Hospital in a stable condition.
A request also went to the family of Kawana Kemp, 9, who is in a serious but stable condition in intensive care. The family is considering the request but it is unlikely they will make themselves available to media at Waikato Hospital.
We ask you respect their wishes.
