Obstetricians Meet Health Minister and Welcomes Impending Release of Government’s Maternity Action Plan

The College of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) today welcomed the imminent release of the Government’s draft Maternity Action Plan.

‘The Government’s acknowledgement of the need to respond to the rapidly rising birth rate is gratifying’, said Dr Gillian Gibson, Chair of the New Zealand Regional Committee RANZCOG, following from a meeting on Tuesday with the Minster of Health, Hon Tony Ryall.

‘Also issues such as screening services for chromosomal abnormalities, access to the specialty services of maternal foetal medicine and gynaecological oncology, need policy decisions that can only be taken at a ministerial level’, said Dr Gibson.

‘The Government is to be commended for the attention it is paying to maternity issues and it is to be hoped that the Budget to be announced will provide the necessary funding for the continuing development of the maternity services in New Zealand’, said Dr Gibson.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) is dedicated to maintaining the highest possible standards in obstetrics and gynaecology in Australia and New Zealand.
