Students 'part of the team' at Waikato Hospital
Waikato Hospital's cardiac thoracic and vascular surgery ward is the best place to learn according to Wintec nursing students.
Sue Hayward, director of nursing, accepted the Best Clinical Placement Award from the Wintec School of Health this week on behalf of Ward 14.
Mrs Hayward said the DHB's relationship with Wintec students is mutually beneficial.
"These students are the future of nursing so it's important to us that they are provided with clinical placements that will enhance their exposure to learning.
"The experience they receive both educationally and clinically influences where they decide to work once registered.
"Their development and learning falls in part to the registered nurse working along side them during clinical placements.
"I am thrilled that Waikato Hospital's commitment to working with these students has been recognised by students and that Ward 14 is the best clinical placement area," she said.
Ward 14 clinical nurse manager Helen Sutton said the ward usually has at least five students and the staff enjoy having them there.
To decide on the award winner, students were asked to consider the relationship between industry staff and students, and the unique learning opportunities their placement offered.
Student feedback for Ward 14 included:
* They
really supported my learning here
* I was encouraged to
extend my practice
* I was part of the team
* Registered Nurse partners made me feel welcome and
valued my opinion in clinical discussions
* Support from
senior staff
* I participated in complex and acute
cases.
Mrs Hayward pointed out that allowing them to take part in complex cases was an important part of the student training at Waikato Hospital.
Wintec's Best Clinical Placement initiative was created in 2006 to recognise industry's commitment to School of Health nurses' experiences within clinical settings.
The first recipient of the award was Waikato Hospital's orthopaedics ward, 26, in 2007.
