Volunteer Coordinator appointed for Kahukura Care

Media Release
From: Jill Stringer
Date: 14 July 2009
Subject: Volunteer Coordinator appointed for Kahukura Palliative Care Service

Well known local woman Sue McKenna has been appointed as Volunteer Coordinator for Kahukura Palliative Care Services. Sue is no stranger to the Volunteer scene – for the last 2 years she has been part-time volunteer co-ordinator at Wairarapa Hospital, and will continue with both roles.

“I believe passionately in the difference volunteers can make for patients,” says Sue. “They are able to fill in many extra things that paid professionals don’t have time for, or that are outside their scope of work. Volunteers for Kahukura families will have a range of activities requested of them, depending on the needs of the individuals and their families. They could take people for drives, take them shopping, give carers a break, or do some washing, cooking, gardening, pet-walking or household support. Some may like to train to help patients write their biographies. All Kahukura volunteers will have training provided by our partner, Te Omanga Hospice services.”

Sue has a background in Occupational Therapy and Mental Health. When living in Auckland, she established a facility for Mental Health clients and saw first hand the difference made by committed volunteers. She is also on the Charity Wine Auction fundraising committee for Te Omanga Hospice.

“It was a pleasure to meet Te Omanga Hospice CEO Biddy Harford again last month at a meeting to thank former Te Omanga volunteers in the Wairarapa, and explain how the service will be carried forward,” says Sue. “Both she and her Family Support Coordinator Mary Harmer are keen to help us stay focussed on the needs of patients and their families, through training and support.”

“Volunteering enriches so many people’s lives,” says Sue. “I’m looking forward to working with more wonderful people who have something to share.”

Kahukura palliative care service was established last year as a partnership between Te Omanga, Wairarapa Community PHO and Wairarapa DHB to meet the needs of patients and their families in their final phase of life. Kahukura has around 60 families receiving services this month.

The Kahukura Volunteer Service will operate from the nursing base in Lincoln Road. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Sue at the nursing base on 3708436.
