Folic Acid National Discussion Missing the Point

Folic Acid National Discussion Missing the Point

A key question of the Folic Acid discussion must be; is adding medicine to our food and water moral? “If we agree that it is acceptable to dose over four million New Zealanders to protect a handful of pregnant mothers per year, it naturally follows that this will lead to medicines being added to our food for many other diseases. Where does it stop?” says Health Freedom NZ spokeswoman Nicola Grace. “The entire national debate is missing this important point. Mass medication is immoral, against good pharmacology and contravenes the Human rights Act and the Medicines Act.”

The Medicines Act defines medicine as “any substance or article, other than a medical device, that is manufactured, imported, sold, or supplied wholly or principally: (a) For administering to one or more human beings for a therapeutic purpose; …” If folic acid is being administered to prevent neural tube defects (NTD’s) then it is being used for a therapeutic purpose and therefore a medicine.

“Mass dosage of a single nutrient across a population also contravenes both the synergistic way in which vitamins work and the basis of modern pharmacology, which is the right dose, to the right person, at the right time”. Where are we going to draw line? Asks Ms Grace. “Will we begin to administer drugs to men to prevent breast cancer or medication to women to prevent prostate cancer. This is how absurd a one size fits all mass medication approach is. These type of issues will not go away until we face the real problem and implement real solutions.”

Health Freedom believes that the lobby groups will be forming a queue to make their particular additive mandatory if we allow this to go ahead. “It is quite an ingenious corporate strategy in these difficult times. Never mind that people aren’t buying, we’ll just get a law passed to make them buy. It’s certainly a lot cheaper than advertising. “ says Ms Grace.

“Fortifying bread with synthetic folic acid because the natural nutrient folate is taken out of the flour due to modern food processing practices is a bandaid solution. If we don’t educate our people, men, women and children, to the laws of good nutrition and personal responsibility for health, then we will continue to have diseases caused or contributed to by nutrient deficient diets. “

“Folic Acid in the bread is not going to solve the problem of nutrient deficiency causing diseases. It is high time the third fattest nation in the OECD had an honest discussion about the true impact of food and nutrition on acute and chronic illness. This discussion should not be dominated by corporate science, whose track record is becoming progressively more tarnished. In the past they have assured us that lead was safe, tobacco was safe, along with the countless drugs which are being recalled with monotonous regularity. Consistently we are told each time it’s perfectly safe and there’s nothing to worry about .”
