New Zealand's Perfect Storm: Older Sicker Poorer
The Health and Wealth Disaster that's just waiting to happen...
New Zealand is a beautiful country in the South Pacific with a population of only 4.3 million.
Against this somewhat idyllic image, we have the second highest obesity rates in the developed world, our health system is crumbling under the pressures of weight-related disease and fewer than 15% of our population have a healthy lifestyle.
We have a rapidly ageing population with the largest growth in those hitting retirement age just before us. More than 110 000 people will turn 65 every 5 years for the next 20 years. That's over 420 every single week for 20 years...
Yet our after-tax superannuation is currently just $310 per week. Compare this with the average weekly mortgage payment in 2008 of $328 and the minimum after tax weekly wage of about $400. Are you facing the prospect of finishing your years with less disposable income than when you started your working life?
What about Kiwisaver in all this? Kiwisaver is a savings regime so you'll always be dependent on the skills of your fund manager for your standard of living during retirement. Retirement is supposed to be a period of slowing down and enjoying life. Do you need the added stress?
Unfortunately, all reasonable measures show that as a nation we are getting older, sicker, poorer. And the individual anecdotal evidence supports this only too well...
What's going on? Why have New Zealanders found themselves in this predicament so unexpectedly?
It's not as though there has been no warning. There have been plenty. But there has been a distinct lack of action in addressing this unfolding situation. Sadly, it is now well beyond the point that we can continue pointing the finger of blame at past deeds.
Added to this is the unwritten expectation that the government will "do something" about it. But governments past and present are like rabbits caught in a spotlight. The enormity of the situation paralyses them. So, at best, we hear squeaks about setting up a taskforce. At worst, they just hope the problem will go away...
But go away the problem will not.
Four hundred people will demonstrate every week for the next 20 years that this situation cannot be ignored. But with the system is as broken as it is, it is beyond the capability of anyone in power to fix it quickly enough to be of benefit to the 500 000 new retirees we'll have in the next two decades. There is no alternative but to fix it ourselves.
We can't do anything about getting older. But you can do a lot about enjoying your ageing...
Let's start with health.
Coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and various cancers cause over 60% of the nation's deaths. Most of which are weight-related so...

For the price of two beers and a cup of coffee per day, or a glass of wine and two coffees if that better suits your tastes, you can replace two meals per day and throw away all your nutritional supplements.
What about wealth?
True wealth comes from owning your own business. And the key to a comfortable retirement is ongoing residual income, not savings.
The ideal business will offer leverage and low overheads. What if you could eat the overhead and become healthy and fail 90% of the time and become wealthy? Too good to be true?

Are you ready to buck the trend of becoming older, sicker, poorer?
