Hospital Workers support mass work stoppage in November
Hospitals workers protesting the Government's wage freeze today strongly supported a resolution calling for a "mass protest stoppage of up to 24 hours in November involving as many public sector and publicly-funded workers as possible".
Hundreds of Service and Food Workers Union members and their supporters picketed outside hospitals in every city and town in New Zealand. Everywhere the resolution was overwhelmingly supported.
Northern Region Secretary Jill Ovens said union members received incredible support from passers-by for their messages of "No Wage Freeze", "Low Pay, No Way" and "Pay Up Key".
"We were chanting, 'National's wage freeze, got to go: Tell John Key we want our dough'," Ms Ovens said.
"Our members were so staunch. They showed they are not of a mind to accept a nil wage increase. Their message to the Government was clear that calls for wage restraint will not wash. Bill English will have to front up with the money for a fair pay rise for hospital workers."
