Call for ACC to concentrate on treating injured people

As ACC concentrates on cutting costs, physiotherapists are calling for a focus on the needs of injured New Zealanders.

“Let’s make sure all New Zealanders understand when they have an accident that they should see a health professional for early treatment of their injuries and that they’re covered by ACC for most of their costs,” said Jonathan Warren, President of the New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists. “If it’s a muscle or joint injury they can come straight to a physio, who can make an ACC claim for them. Early treatment can shorten the healing process and get people back to ordinary life faster. For serious injuries, a delay in seeking help can mean long or even permanent impairment.”

Mr Warren said that we should acknowledge ACC as New Zealand’s unique accident compensation, rehabilitation and prevention scheme. “Of course ACC must be run efficiently. As health providers physios appreciate that we’re accountable for the funding we receive. But let’s keep the focus on the people this scheme is designed to help. Everybody – politicians, ACC bureaucrats, and providers – we must all ensure that any changes are designed with those injured New Zealanders in mind.”

Mr Warren urged ACC, when making any changes, to review frequently their impact on patients’ access to treatment and on the success of treatments in terms of rehabilitation.
