Fresh Lick of Paint for Old Hospital Buildings
Waikato Hospital’s creamy terracotta buildings are a familiar view for many Hamiltonians and people travelling through town.
They are in sight from almost everywhere in the city, but come June these iconic buildings will have received a well-overdue facelift.
Building maintenance manager Gordon Peters said work is well underway on the buildings first fresh coat of paint in up to 20 years.
“It’s a significant paint job that will see the hospital’s most prominent buildings blend in and match the new carpark building, Emergency and Newborn Intensive Care Unit,” he said.
The Waiora Waikato Centre, Elizabeth Rothwell, Menzies and Lomas buildings are all inline for a splash of paint, a combination of white, gravel and teal.
Mr Peters said the $900,000 project started in November and is expected to be completed in June, depending on the weather.
“When you’re working outside and fully exposed to the weather you never really know what you are dealing with each day, especially as we head into winter.
“So we’re starting on the south sides of the buildings, the more exposed sides, and working our way around in case the weather turns bad,” he said.
The fresh new look can already be seen from some angles.
Mr Peters said those going up in the hot-air balloons over the next few weeks will get the best views.
