Emendo sales accelerate with another major export

Emendo sales accelerate with another major export win
- Six urban hospitals in British Colombia Canada to implement CapPlan

Media release, 19 August 2010, Emendo Ltd, Christchurch, New Zealand: Within weeks of securing two major multimillion dollar deals with SA Health and WA Health in Australia, Emendo has been awarded a milestone regional deal with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) in Canada. Six hospitals in the Vancouver region will be linked using Emendo’s CapPlan technology to predict inpatient demand and staffing requirements. The new tool will directly benefit patients by increasing their access to an acute care bed.

The contract is Emendo’s first regional implementation in Canada and provides valuable confirmation of the operational benefits that CapPlan brings to hospitals. Emendo was selected via a competitive tender process which involved reputable North American vendors.

Emendo Director, Nick Burns, says, “Breaking into a new export market is always a challenge, and Canada is no exception. VCH conducted a rigorous pilot of CapPlan and certainly put it through its paces. To win the contract is hugely rewarding for us. VCH is one of six publicly-funded healthcare regions within the Canadian province of British Columbia, and an important reference site for us as we focus our sales efforts in North America.”

The decision to award the contract to Emendo was based on the positive outcomes following an extensive pilot of the software at Richmond Hospital in July 2009. VCH is now adopting CapPlan permanently for Richmond Hospital and extending it to five other urban hospitals.

Mark Chase, VCH Executive Director - Decision Support, says “We have been seeking an effective tool that has the ability to accurately forecast inpatient demand and staffing requirements across all wards at any time. This new tool will also allow us to track peak patient usage and recognise recurring patterns. It will also help us manage occasional events ranging from seasonal closures to H1N1 outbreaks.”

“Our implementation of CapPlan fully supports VCH’s workforce optimisation initiatives,” said Duncan Campbell, Chief Financial Officer & VP Systems Development & Performance, VCH.

CapPlan integrates data from multiple sources to improve capacity planning and operational performance in hospitals. Administrators and nurses can easily see in real time how many patients have been admitted, how many beds are occupied, and the patients’ predicted length of stay. With CapPlan, staff can also model different scenarios, taking into account seasonal fluctuations in demand, and proactively plan leave rosters, bed allocations and theatre schedules accordingly.

VCH serves 25% of the population in British Columbia Canada, totalling over 1 million people. As VCH is the first health region in the BC province and in Canada to adopt CapPlan, it is likely that the full CapPlan implementation will be monitored closely by other healthcare organisations in North America.

About Emendo

Emendo develops CapPlan, a healthcare-specific capacity planning tool which uses algorithms to match staff and physical resources, including beds and theatres, with patient demand. Hospitals in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Canada are using CapPlan to forecast patient demand for a ward, a whole hospital or a region, for periods of up to five years.

In 2009, Emendo was recognised at the UK’s Health and Social Care Awards when its customer Bedford Hospital NHS Trust in England was named winner of the ‘Adopt, Adapt and Improve’ category. The awards are run in partnership between the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Department of Health in the UK.
