World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day

November 14 is World Diabetes Day, a day that this year is devoted to ‘bringing diabetes to light’ by improving diabetes education and prevention .

People living with diabetes generally deliver 95% of their own care, making the information, support and education they get of paramount importance .

Dallas is 78 and is living with a series of chronic conditions including diabetes.

She had ongoing high blood sugar level readings and a threat from her doctor that her insulin dosage would need to be increased to four times a day if she did not reduce her readings.

Consequently, Dallas was selected as a trial patient for Tunstall’s mytelemedic telehealth package.

Dallas was reminded to take her blood sugar level, a sequence of other vital signs and answer a series of health related questions on a regular basis.

All of the data from these reports was transmitted to a monitoring centre where abnormal readings for her were identified by a triage nurse and where necessary her GP was notified to intervene.

The nurse was also able to identify areas that Dallas needed more education about her conditions, such as reducing the quantity of carbohydrates in her diet and increasing her physical activity.

Within three months, Dallas lost 3kg and her blood sugar level is now regularly within healthy limits.

By using Tunstall’s telehealth system Dallas has been able to better understand how her behaviours and actions affect how she feels.

“Before the telehealth program I had no idea what was going on with my diabetes. Now I feel more independent and in charge... It really does make you more aware”.

Tunstall’s telehealth program is a great tool for being able to manage chronic conditions, including diabetes, in the comfort of your own home.
