How would you know if you'd benefit from antidepressants?

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

*How would you know if you'd benefit from antidepressants?*

It's likely that in New Zealand we find it easier to talk about depression than most other countries in the world. After all, we've had a number of public media campaigns that have brought it out of the closet and gone some way to remove the stigma that historically surrounded this illness. If this has made it easier for the one in five of us who will suffer from depression to talk about, then that's got to be good!

But for many of us who are challenged with depression, finding the right treatment can be a long and difficult process of trialing some of the many antidepressant medications available. Those who have experienced this process will know too well the rollercoaster ride of mood and emotions that typically occurs when starting, stopping, or transitioning between antidepressant medications. This challenge could deter people from exploring other treatment options and potentially prolong their recovery.

Currently, the University of Auckland is partnering in an international study to identify physical and psychological signs that could predict how individuals might respond to treatment for depression. The outcome of this research could assist doctors in selecting the right medication for the individual, and help them receive the best treatment right away.

The study involves three visits to the University of Auckland based clinic, receiving an assessment by a specialist and taking an antidepressant medication for eight weeks at no cost to the participant.

If you believe you have depression, and would be happy to be assessed and receive treatment as part of this study, then find out more by visiting www.depression.getparticipants.com
