The ‘Breast’ Ride Ever Ride-a-thon, November 19

The ‘Breast’ Ride Ever Ride-a-thon, November 19

On Saturday 19th November cityfitness clubs across New Zealand will be hosting The ‘Breast’ Ride Ever, Ride-a-thon. This event will comprise of up to four consecutive group cycling classes running from 8.30am – 12.30pm across 16 of the 19 cityfitness clubs around the country. The aim of the event, which is run in conjunction with The Breast Cancer Research Trust (BCRT), is two tiered; to raise money for BCRT and also to help raise the profile of the organisation and their mission of finding a cure for breast cancer by 2018.

The ‘Breast Ride Ever’ is open to both cityfitness members and non-members. Participants are encouraged to get a group together and buy a team seat for $40. This will be the team’s bike for the duration of the 4 hour event; one bike for 4 classes. It is up to each group to determine the number of team members and for how long each participant will ride. For example, one person could ride for the duration or time slots could be split across 40 people or more. Teams are also encouraged to dress up and make up a funny team name to add to the fun of the event.

Allyson Donnelly, cityfitness Director of Group Fitness says ‘100% of the proceeds will be donated to the BCRT. With the potential to host over 1500 participants we are aiming to raise $25,000! Given the disturbing fact that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, and growing, cityfitness are delighted to once again support this vital organisation’.

Statistics published by BCRT are alarming; one in nine women in New Zealand will develop breast cancer during their lifetime with around 2,600 New Zealand women diagnosed with breast cancer each year – that’s seven every day. More than 660 New Zealand women will die from the disease this year and while the incidence of breast cancer is highest in women aged 50 to 54, 25% of breast cancers occur in women under the age of 50 and 5% occur in women under 40.
