Social media quit smoking challenge 2012

Embargoed until 1 January 2012

New Zealanders quitting smoking as a New Year resolution can use an innovative, free social media platform in a nationwide smokefree challenge starting on 14 January.

The technology platform Goalpost, which goes live for sign-ups on 1 January, will harness the power of social media and connect people, who want to quit, with supporters, tools and games to help break the nicotine addiction.

People logging onto Goalpost will be able to set their own quit goals, invite friends and family to support their quit attempt, as well as providing opportunities to connect with others with the same goal.

Goalpost co-founder Siobhan Bulfin says the aim is to get New Zealand smokers quitting and supporting each other through social technology and game play.

“Research shows that people are much more likely to quit smoking if they have the support of their family, co-workers and friends and if they have achievable goals to work towards. We also know that people are more likely to achieve their goal if challenged and rewarded.”

Siobhan says a key element of Goalpost is that it’s fun. Game elements are rolled out during the quit challenge and supporters are able to pledge special treats to keep participants on track towards their goal.

“People connect on-line every day about the things that matter to them and we know that most smokers want to quit.”

Goalpost has partnered with Quitline and the Health Sponsorship Council (HSC) so people are inspired to stop smoking, support their friends who are trying to quit and access the kind of support that will greatly increase their chances of beating the addiction for good.

Background information

Goalpost is the trading name of Social Code Ltd. Social Code develops web and mobile applications that help users stay focused and healthy by setting achievable goals, keeping them motivated and rewards (challenges, risks, incentives and rewards). These rewards could be weight-loss, fitness, education, career goals, saving money or parenting etc.

Health is an area where almost everything has been tried to motivate people in a positive direction, from increasing tobacco taxes, extensive advertising, societal pressure, laws, gyms, surgeries and drugs etc with limited success.

Socialising and gamifying health and wellness in partnership with professional advice has not been tried before, and it is this combined approach that Goalpost is built on.
