New Appointments To Breaast Cancer Foundation Committee
Dr Stephen Mills takes over as chair of Medical Advisory Committee;
Oncologist Dr Anna Bashford appointed to committee
Dr Stephen Mills has been appointed chair of The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), and oncologist Dr Anna Bashford has joined the committee.
Dr Mills, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who’s been involved in breast reconstruction surgery in Auckland since 1999 and a member of the MAC since 2004, said that in the current economic climate it’s more important than ever for charities like the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation to spend money wisely. The Medical Advisory Committee has an important role to play in determining the Foundation’s priorities.
“Breast cancer is a massive journey for the patient,” he said. “The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation has a long history of looking at where the journey is incomplete and filling those gaps.”
The appointment of oncologist Dr Anna Bashford adds to the Medical Advisory Committee’s pharmacology expertise. “As new drugs are developed and are potentially on the table for New Zealand women, the foundation has an important role to play in ongoing advocacy on patients’ behalf,” Dr Bashford said.
Dr Mills said Dr Bashford’s expertise will be invaluable in assessing research funding opportunities. “We want to fund great, strong research that builds on the tremendous work that’s been done in the past,” he said. He believes the Medical Advisory Committee’s composition from across the medical spectrum – including radiology, pathology, oncology, surgery and reconstruction – is one of its strengths, and key to helping the Foundation address women’s needs throughout the entire cancer journey.
