Begin right by always thinking of safety

This Queens Birthday weekend many Kiwis will be tackling their winter-proof to-do list before the colder weather really settles in.

Whether you’re planning to clear guttering, stow away outdoor furniture and clean the bbq grill, clear the paths, stack firewood, or prepare the garden - don’t forget to injury-proof yourself.

Nearly 15 000 people were injured over the Queens Birthday weekend in 2012 but ACC is confident that our 'can do' attitude can also translate into 'can do it right' and reduce the number of accidents this weekend.

Work to the conditions, use the right equipment, wear protective gear, where appropriate, keep children away from work areas, follow basic ladder safety rules when climbing, clear away clutter and hazards. Also, take your time; a lot of injuries happen at the end of the day when you are getting tired and rushing.

A little Kiwi foresight and a few simple safety steps could make the difference between a productive long weekend or waiting in A&E for a long time.
