Hon Tariana Turia’s Exceptional Work for the Disability Community Recognised by CCS Disability Action

Hon Tariana Turia was made a Life Member of CCS Disability Action in recognition of her exceptional work for the disability community. The former Minister for Disability Issues was awarded Life Membership during CCS Disability Action’s recent annual general meeting.

CCS Disability Action’s Chief Executive, David Matthews, said that Hon Tariana Turia had been an excellent Minister for Disability Issues who had left a strong legacy.

“Tariana was a powerful advocate for disability issues. During her time as Minister, Enabling Good Lives was started and she was behind a series of Disability Action Plans. She has made a real difference.”

Mr. Matthews also said that Hon Tariana Turia was a very accessible Minister, always willing to talk to people and listen to new ideas.

“Tariana was a very open and genuine Minister. She engaged with individuals and organisations across the disability community. She really took the time to get to know the disability community. We understand she was hesitant about the role at first, but she was a great Minister.”

Mr Matthews said it was vital to have champions within Government.
“For seventy nine years, we have been fighting for disabled people to get a fair go. We know how important it is to have champions inside Government. Tariana was one of those champions and I am sure she will continue to be involved with the disability community.”
