Students turn to helpline for exam stress

Students turn to helpline for exam stress

12 November 2014

NCEA exams started this week, placing stress on young people around the country. 0800 What’s Up knows from the increased calls it gets from young people just how stressful exam times can be and are there for support.

0800 What’s Up Manager Rhonda Morrison says sometimes young people just need someone outside their normal support circle to talk about the pressure and stress of exam time, and What’s Up is there to listen.

She reminds young people that the What’s Up counsellors are there to help in times of stress and can provide support on the phone or through the new online chat service that can be accessed through Whatsup.co.nz.

“Everyone feels worried or anxious from time to time – it’s a normal part of life. An important step is to talk about it. Give us a call and we can help you work out strategies to manage how you are feeling”, Rhonda says.

“We provide a confidential space for young people to talk about what’s going on and to help them come up with strategies to help deal with exam stress so they can go into their exams feeling confident” she adds.

About 0800 What’s Up

0800 What's Up is a free, national phone counselling service for five to 18 year olds. It’s open 365 days a year from 1pm-11pm, and in an average year answers more than 80,000 calls – in fact, it’s the most accessed professional telephone counselling service for children and young people in New Zealand. More than 95% of the helpline’s funding comes through the generosity of New Zealanders who want to make a difference to children’s lives.
