Flying High for Waikato’s Future
One of Waikato’s own has been invited to Harvard as part of a programme that aims to train global leaders in child oral health and prevention.
Specialist paediatric dentist Katie Ayers was selected from dentists throughout Australasia to attend this strategic leadership course, hosted by the Global Child Dental Fund and King’s College London.
She will join 16 other leading dentists from England, United States, Rwanda, Thailand, Qatar, Mexico, Canada and Cambodia as part of the week-long programme.
The Global Child Dental Health taskforce is a charity focused on the dental care of the most disadvantaged children around the world with the vision to eliminate dental cavities in the child population.
The programme, now in its 9th year, works as a catalyst for sustainable change by equipping local leaders to solve the challenges faced by their own countries and regions.
Katie will have the opportunity to consolidate and expand her leadership skills and develop new methods to improve the quality of policy making in New Zealand.
Last year she was also invited to attend the International College of Dentist’s young dental leader’s programme.
“I was amused to qualify as a ‘young dentist’ and a ‘senior dental leader’ in the same month.”
Katie is a specialist paediatric dentist, an oral health advisor and approving dental officer for the Midland district health boards (Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairawhiti, Taranaki and Waikato).
She also runs a part time paediatric dentistry practice in Hamilton.
