Guild supports current pharmacist-only classification of medicines containing codeine

The Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand (the Guild) believes the current pharmacist-only classification of medicines containing codeine is appropriate. !

In New Zealand, medicines containing codeine are only available from a community pharmacy after consultation with a pharmacist. There is currently no proposal to change this classification in New Zealand. !

Australia’s medicines regulator announced last week that they are considering a proposal to make around 150 medicines containing codeine prescription-only. This would mean they require a prescription from a GP. !

Guild Chief Executive, Lee Hohaia says “As with any pharmacist-only medicine, a pharmacist is required to consult with the patient to determine which medicine to supply and provide direction on taking the medicine safety. This includes medicines containing codeine. !

“Medicines containing codeine are intended for short term use. This is reinforced on the label, along with a warning that codeine is addictive. !

“Pharmacists are trained to spot people looking to misuse medicines, including codeine, and take this responsibly seriously. !

“New Zealand does not have a real-time monitoring system for codeine sales. The Guild would fully support the implementation of such a system.” !
