Conference will highlight spirituality in palliative care and the needs of the aged

The Selwyn Foundation’s Centre for Ageing and Spirituality will be hosting a one-day conference on spirituality in palliative care, with a focus on older people, on 17 September 2015.

This full-day event will present a variety of cultural, religious and secular views, with expert speakers across a range of disciplines providing fascinating perspectives on the topic of spirituality at the end-of-life stage. It will be of interest to older people, health and aged-care workers, chaplains and pastoral caregivers, members of religious organisations, students and academics, and anyone involved in the care of older people during the end stages of their lives.

Keynote speakers and their presentation topics include:

• Dr Rosalie Hudson, Associate Professor, The University of Melbourne: “Spiritual bodies”

• Ecie Hursthouse, RN, NZ Buddhist Chaplain, Vice-Chair of the NZ Buddhist Council and Managing Director of Amitabha Hospice: “Buddhist view of spirituality”

• Dr Juliet Batten, author and transpersonal psychotherapist and teacher: “Pathways to grace-filled dying”

• Dr Tess Moeke-Maxwell, Research Fellow, School of Nursing, The University of Auckland: “Pae Herenga: An investigation of traditional Maori care customs”

• Dr Michal Boyd, Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and a Senior Lecturer with the School of Nursing and the Freemasons’ Department of Geriatric Medicine, The University of Auckland: “Palliative care in aged residential care and effects on staff”

• Dr Richard Egan, Lecturer in Health Promotion, The University of Otago: “Spirituality in later life: policy and place”.

The event will take place on Thursday, 17 September 2015, 8.15 am - 4.00 pm, at the Selwyn Theatre, Selwyn Village, 43 Target Street, Point Chevalier, Auckland.

Special ‘early bird’ registration is open until 1 September 2015 at $90 incl GST. The full price of $110 (incl. GST) is payable for bookings after 1 September 2015. The delegate fee includes attendance at all conference sessions, lunch, tea/coffee and conference notes.

The conference offers a total of 8 professional hours.
