Assured best practice at Massey’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital

Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital has become a BESTPRACTICE accredited veterinary hospital, one of only two in New Zealand.

BESTPRACTICE is New Zealand’s only quality assurance scheme specifically for veterinary practices in New Zealand and aims to deliver the highest standard of care, service and professionalism for animals and clients.

Sandy Marshall, Operations Manager of Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, said that “BESTPRACTICE accreditation is a lengthy and intensive process and it is entirely worthwhile for the hospital, and our staff and veterinary students.”

“We use the words ‘best practice’ at our hospital and our veterinary students are trained to the highest standards. While this is part of our culture we also wanted to gain accreditation to show the quality of service and care our staff provide to our clients and their pets, horses or livestock.”

At the hospital veterinary undergraduates in their final-year of studies work alongside senior clinical staff, gaining extensive experience and specialist training to hone their skills and help prepare them for their future careers in veterinary medicine.

“For our students being part of a BESTPRACTICE hospital instils a level of pride that they can take out to the wider veterinary community. We want our students to graduate with a knowledge of how important the BESTPRACTICE standards and accreditation are to increasing the value and trust of the veterinary profession.”

BESTPRACTICE accredited clinics and hospitals are rigorously audited prior to accreditation and then every two years after this by an independent auditor.

Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital gained accreditation across all the services the hospital provide – companion animal, equine and production animal.
