I will march for Moko

This Sunday, 22nd of May at various centres around the country the New Zealand public is invited to join together as a nation to march against Child Abuse.

The “I will march for Moko” events were created by a group of like-minded mums from around the country, who ten days ago were complete strangers. Spurred on by Duncan Garner’s article “Who will march for Moko?” They decided to take up the challenge and do something, to create unity and a forum for change.

The group of woman have branded themselves “A.S.K” Angels Saving Kids, they were asked who will march, they asked who will join them and they now want to encourage people to ASK when they have concerns for a family or a child and that a person asks for help if they need it. Each mum has created a Facebook event and the word has spread like wild fire, with numbers now reaching almost a thousand for each area but with an interest of up to five thousand and climbing.

The purpose of the march is for people to be able to come together in a peaceful manner to honor Moko and all other children who have suffered from abuse in New Zealand. It is an opportunity to gather as a united front, to raise awareness and invoke change by taking a national responsibility to protect children.

The marches planned are not focused on the sentencing of Moko’s perpetrators, calls for harsher penalties, nor are they about finger pointing or blaming agencies. Any form of aggression, foul language or violent requests for justice will not be supported or tolerated at the marches. It is about channeling any anger or frustration in a passionate way and focusing on what we as a national can do for early intervention and support. It is a family event where people can bring their children to a non-aggressive march where there will be guest speakers and a minute silence for the souls who have gone.
