Surge in measles cases easily preventable with immunisations
New cases of measles continue to be confirmed throughout New Zealand. The New Zealand Medical Students’ Association (NZMSA) wishes to urge kiwis to immunise their children and for healthcare providers to support this.
“Measles is a very contagious and serious viral illness that can result in life threatening consequences. It is almost entirely preventable by a simple, safe and effective immunisation,” says NZMSA President Mike Fleete.
Ministry of Health data show that 83.5% of all 5 year-old children in New Zealand were fully immunised at the end of March 2016. However, an immunisation rate of over 95% is required to prevent outbreaks of measles and protect our tamariki.
“We acknowledge the increasing rates of childhood immunisations across the country, but find the recent outbreaks to be a sobering reminder that there is still work to be done.”
“NZMSA want to take this opportunity to urge parents and health practitioners across Aotearoa to make a concerted effort to get our childhood immunisation rates up. In light of the recent outbreaks there is clear evidence we need to be doing more to protect our vulnerable.”
For more information see www.health.govt.nz/measles. If you are unsure if your child is immunised or have any concerns, please contact your healthcare provider.
