Tracking Success: NZCT Helps WanderSearch Keep Loved Ones Safe

New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded WanderSearch Auckland a $5,000 grant to refurbish 200 safety tracking devices for people with cognitive impairments, helping families stay connected and giving peace of mind that loved ones can be located quickly if they wander.

Programme Manager Michelle Webb-Atkinson says, “Having a loved one wear a tracking device provides peace of mind to whanau and friends, and our goal is to ensure all those who need a tracking device can easily access one.”

People with conditions such as dementia or autism may wander and become lost or disoriented. WanderSearch provides tracking devices at no charge, which emit a unique electronic signal detectable by trained Search & Rescue personnel. The devices support independence while reducing stress and isolation for both clients and their families.

Joan from Newmarket says, “It is marvellous what you do, I am grateful. My husband has gone missing three times to date, the last time for two hours but the Police managed to find him still safe and without distress.”

Kirsten from Remuera adds, “My son is completely fine with his tracking device - he uses it at school and has not tried to remove it.”

NZCT GM of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, says, “We were delighted to support this programme which gives affected families and loved ones that extra peace of mind. NZCT can fund this community good thanks to the fundraising partnerships we share with local hospitality venues via their responsible gaming lounges.”
