Green Light For New National PHO Focused On Frontline Care
thePHO has today received approval from Health New Zealand to operate as a Primary Health Organisation, marking a significant step for general practice and community-based care across Aotearoa New Zealand.
The decision enables thePHO to begin operating from 1 July, with a model focused on reducing bureaucracy, supporting general practice, and ensuring more funding reaches frontline patient care.
thePHO has been established as a not-for-profit organisation with a clear mandate to improve health outcomes and support accessible, high-quality, and equitable care for communities .
thePHO Chief Executive Officer, Tony Wai, says the approval reflects strong support for a different approach.
“This is a positive step for general practice and for the communities we serve.
We have built thePHO to be lean, practical, and focused on what matters day to day in practices. That means less complexity, clearer support, and more of the available funding staying with practices and patients.”
Wai says the model has been shaped by what practices have consistently said they need.
“Practices want stability and support that works in the real world. They want to spend less time navigating systems and more time delivering care. That has guided how we have designed thePHO.”
thePHO Chair, Peter Townsend, says the organisation is well placed to support the future of primary care.
“General practice is central to the health system, and it needs to be supported to remain sustainable.
thePHO combines national scale with a strong regional and local focus. That allows services to respond to the needs of communities while maintaining consistency across the country.”
Townsend says the approval provides a clear path forward.
“This allows us to move into the next phase with certainty. Our focus is now on onboarding practices and ensuring we are ready to deliver from day one.”
Primary health organisations play a key role between Health New Zealand and general practices, supporting the delivery of essential health services to enrolled populations.
thePHO will now progress onboarding and implementation ahead of its planned go-live on 1 July.
