Menodoctor Launches National Survey On Women And Testosterone Therapy
A new nationwide survey is calling on New Zealand women to share their experiences with testosterone therapy as part of a growing conversation around menopause and women’s hormonal health.
The Menodoctor Testosterone Survey, launched by Dr Linda Dear founder of the Menodoctor menopause clinic (www.menodoctor.com) aims to better understand how testosterone is currently being prescribed to women here in New Zealand and what real-life experiences they are having with the treatment.
“Many people still think of testosterone as purely a male hormone, but testosterone is also important for women,” says Dr Linda Dear.
“Women have testosterone receptors throughout their body and brain. As women age, testosterone production naturally declines, and by the time many women reach their 40s, testosterone levels are around half of what they were in their 20s.”
Testosterone therapy can be prescribed as part of hormone therapy for women experiencing symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause. Many women report that testosterone leads to improvements in their libido, sexual satisfaction, orgasm, motivation, mood, memory, energy, and sleep.
However, despite increasing international discussion around testosterone therapy for women, there remains significant caution, confusion, and inconsistency around prescribing practices here in NZ.
“We have very little data on how testosterone is being used for women here in NZ and what experiences they are having,” says Dr Dear.
“This survey is about giving women a voice. We want to hear real stories — both positive and negative — so we can better understand how testosterone therapy is working in everyday real-life, not just in clinical trials.”
The anonymous survey is open to any New Zealand woman who has ever used testosterone therapy, now or in the past.
The findings will help inform future conversations around menopause care, prescribing, education, and access to treatment options in New Zealand.
