SPCA gets new car thanks to WCC Parking Services

The SPCA are the proud owners of a brand new Toyota Corolla thanks to a chain of unlikely events and the sharp eyes of George Skimming, ex-manager of Wellington City Council’s Parking Services.

Yesterday, Wellington SPCA launched a new Charitable Trust to raise the approximately $2 million needed to build their new purpose-built base.

Some weeks ago, Mr Skimming and the team at Parking Services won a car in a draw run by radio station MoreFM for its advertisers.

Mr Skimming spotted the SPCA’s call for donations yesterday and decided to donate the car.

“It was an easy call to make,” says Mr Skimming, who is now head of the Council’s Environmental Control Business unit.

“Wellington SPCA is a great organisation that does a difficult and often thankless job. We’d love to see the SPCA set up in a new home and know that we helped make it happen.

Wellington SPCA Director, Ro Williams can’t thank Mr Skimming and WCC Parking Services enough.

“I’m a firm believer in the generosity of Wellingtonians and this gift has strengthened that faith,” says Ms Williams.

“It’s all happened so fast - we haven’t decided at this stage how to use the car to raise money. Frankly, we’re all still a bit overwhelmed.”

George will hand the keys to the new Toyota Corolla to Ro Williams of Wellington SPCA tomorrow (23 September) at 11am in Civic Square.
