West Coast Forest Dispute to Court
The Government's decision to end beech tree logging on the West Coast is heading for Court.
Last Friday lawyers acting for mill owners issued court proceedings against Forestry Minister, Pete Hodgson, Finance Minister, Michael Cullen and SOE Timberlands Ltd over the cancellation of beech forest contracts.
The four West Coast Council's have filed affidavits in support of the action. The case is scheduled for a first hearing on 2 February.
The millers say they had no choice but to take legal action because millions of dollars are involved. It is understood the matter is now subjudice.
