Marijuana Support Hazy
Support for the decriminalisation of marijuana is either high or in the minority depending on which television poll you believe.
A One News Colmar-Brunton poll of 1000 people last night showed 55 per cent of people surveyed supported spot fines instead of criminal convictions for possession of marijuana, a move which amounts to effective decriminalisation.
The TV3 poll showed almost a mirror image of its rival with 53 per cent of New Zealanders against decriminalization and only 41 per cent in favour. The poll showed the young predominately supported a law change with 18-29 year-olds showing 52 per cent support for decriminalisation. It also surveyed 1000 people.
Both Prime Minister Helen Clark and Health Minister Annette King have made their support for marijuana decriminalisation well known with Miss Clark openly supporting spot fines as a solution.
The two polls had margins of error of plus or minus three per cent.
