Fiji: New President Tipped By Newssite

Adi Samanunu, Fiji's high commissioner to Malaysia, is tipped to become the next Fijian president, reports internet newssite www.fijilive.com.

The newsite reveals that Ms. Samanunu is one of the main guests in a meeting of Fijian chiefs and nationalist rebel George Speight which began in the Parliament complex at 2pm today.

The meeting is expected to outline the Muanikau Accord, the agreement between Speight and the military, and explain a controversial deed of sovereignty circulated among the chiefs.

The get-together is a precursor to a full meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs which will be convened tomorrow to appoint a president and vice president.

The site was previously correct in it’s pick of Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase selected by the military to run the country last week.

Meanwhile, disruption in the Islands is continuing with reports of a new group of landowners taking over an Anglican Church in Wailevu, Labasa.

The church is built on freehold property and the landowners are demanding talks with the church officials and the Native Land Trust Board, reports FM 96.

The landowners have been on the property since Monday.
