BREAKING NEWS

What Now For O'Brien, Shier?

* KERRY O'BRIEN, host of the ABC's 7.30 Report, is one of a high-profile group set to defend the traditions of the ABC, as its new budget and restructure take shape. Other 'defenders' include QUENTIN DEMPSTER, MARK COLVIN and GREG WILESMITH. AMANDA MEADE of The Weekend Australian reports that ABC MD JONATHAN SHIER is being savagely criticised for 'failure ... to directly to answer questions or take responsibility for his decisions', with no confidence motions in Brisbane and Melbourne. Could it be a race between O'Brien and Shier to see who implodes first?

* PETER LAWRENCE, Melbourne media commentator, told radio audiences on Friday that O'Brien appears tired on air. This followed O'Brien's marathon interview with ABC Board Chairman DONALD McDONALD; a chat that exhausted more than 15 minutes of national air-time, over the 3 per cent news budget cut. Talkback callers queried O'Brien's balance in the program and the story. They compared the on-screen 'fitness' of the Nine Network's MIKE MUNRO ('who looks like he's just come out of the gym') with O'BRIEN, perhaps a little obsessed with the ABC issue, at the expense of other news stories. After O'Brien's high-spirited performance at this year's Logies, and now this ongoing ABC story imbalance, is the ABC presenter losing valuable street credibility? Might it be that O'Brien saves his program, but blows himself out of the water in the process?

* Simultaneously, JOHN LYONS' Sunday report (yesterday, Nine Network) and LAURIE OAKES' subsequent interview with JONATHAN SHIER showed the ABC MD's budgetary restructure to be high on the 'sell', but seriously lacking in staff backing. Most flak is coming from the News and Current Affairs Division where the full-year budget allocation is $112.07 million. According to an ABC internal press release, 'actual expenditure in 1999-2000, adjusted from comparative purposes, was $115.734 million'. News bosses will have to spend 3.2 per cent less, after recent blow-outs.

Beware: 'Reporter-at-Large'

* ROBERT WHITEHEAD'S appojntment as Sydney Morning Herald Editor sees incumbent PAUL McGEOUGH now as New York 'Reporter-at-Large'. It also sees a staff letter-of-protest in circulation, questioning 'the company's fundamental commitment to quality'. Editor-in-Chief GREG HYWOOD described McGeough as 'an excellent editor', leaving the paper 'in significantly better shape than when he took over'. MARK SCOTT, Saturday SMH Editor, becomes the Group's Director of Organisation and Development. FRED HILMER told staff: 'These appointments are part of a series of changes designed to strengthen our organisation and our people.'

Jack's Back

* MARSHA THOMSON, Victorian Fair Trading Minister, this time last year refused Fair Trading Act exemptions for some established newspaper publishers, thereby requiring signed orders for every single advertisement prior to publication. Errant publishers face a $24,000 fine for each ad without the client's autograph. Interesting therefore to see convicted fraudster JACK PACHOLLI - recently given a suspended jail sentence on dishonesty charges - back in print in The Toorak Times, in two editions: Kew, Hawthorn and Camberwell; St Kilda, Middle Park, Albert Park, Port Melbourne. Hope the publisher has signed orders for every one of the 316 ads in his October 24-page Kew edition.

* No printer or publisher appears to be listed in the Toorak Times. The only address is 'PO Box 2224, West St Kilda'.

XS-Media Goes Live

* JASMINE BESCHOMER of Royce Communications Ltd, Melbourne, advises that XS-Media, has launched an online community site for media buying at www.xs-media.com.au CAMERON KNIGHT, Managing Director, says the XS-Media site will include information and tools for media buyers and sellers, which will improve the efficiencies of existing practices: 'XS-Media is a purpose-built on-desk partner for Australian media buyers and sellers. It will also serve as a community portal providing news and top-line research from Australia's leading research companies as well as functioning as an innovative transaction model.'

* CAMERON KNIGHT continues: 'For media planners and buyers the concept of an independent B2B on-line 'media marketplace' is a positive. Similarly for sellers, XS-Media gives them the opportunity to access the complete media buying marketplace as well as freeing up their time to further build their brand and enhance their client relationships. For both, the prospect of minimising the paper trail is appealing.'

Packer's Big News Week

* KERRY PACKER, Consolidated Press chief, is in the news on a number of fronts. ROBERT GOTTLIEBSEN reports in The Weekend Australian that Telstra Chairman BOB MANSFIELD (a Packer ally) is undertaking some of the functions of CEO ZIGGY SWITKOWSKI. And, he says, the plan for Telstra to purchase the Nine Network is still on the Packer family's agenda. 'Canberra is apprehensive that the Packers will not only end up with their digital television power but Foxtel as well,' says Gotty.

* KERRY PACKER is negotiating to purchase half of Stadium Australia's managing company, also according to The Weekend Australian. This would give influence to his company at Homebush, Brisbane, Cairns, Newcastle and Perth.

* 'KERRY PACKER'S Plan For Your Health'. The wording for a Today Tonight (Seven Network) promotion for tonight's segment about million dollar purchases of local medical practices.

* And JIM PACKER is listed as a letter writer in the November Quadrant. No, not the one from Bondi ... but from Macquarie Fields (NSW), talking about The Brothers Karamazov.

Scotland The Brave

* BRUCE CAMPBELL, Editor of The Highland Gathering newspaper, has had a complaint by ANDREW McKINNON upheld by the Australian Press Council. The newspaper reported how Scottish-born accordionist JOHN MacKENZIE had registered the name, Scotland The Brave, prior to the same being registered by McKinnon. Mr Campbell sought comment from McKinnon by E-Mail. In his complaint, McKinnon said he had inadequate knowledge of the nature of McDonald's remarks for him to make a proper rebuttal. The Press Council says the article was unfair because McKinnon was not advised or given a chance to respond to the personal attack made on him.

Company Reputations: Acid Test

* RUSSELL SKELTON, Deputy Editor (Business) at The Age, with LAUREL GROSSMAN, Director of Reputation Measurement, are chief amongst those responsible for a special 20-page report appearing today, and also in the sister Sydney Morning Herald. The papers reveal which Australian company enjoys the best reputation, as judged by expert and various stakeholder groups. The study includes best and worst performing banks; Australia's leading property developers; and Australia's best airline.

WIN Television Merges TV, Internet

* BRUCE GORDON, Owner of WIN Television, is announcing an Australian-first by launching a TV-friendly information channel (ichannel) utilising existing assets from its web portal winNET. WIN's ichannel has been purpose-built for participants in ICE Interactive's interactive TV pilot in Orange (NSW). Pilot participants can quickly access local orange new, daily weather, local sports news whilst simultaneously watching free-to-air television. The service provides links to the Orange City Council site and allows viewers to pay their Council rates with a few clicks of the TV remote control (money not included).

* BRUCE GORDON says: 'Being able to check flight timetables and pay bills via the TV is a breakthrough for those pilot participants who were previously deterred from accessing the Internet and electronic commerce because they feared the complexity of using a PC.'

Geelong TV Station Not Viable: Bell

(Even If Ballarat Supports Three)

* TONY BELL, CEO of Southern Cross Broadcasting, has told JANE SCHULZE (The Age) that a Geelong (Vic.) based television station would not be viable. Bell's company controls the Ten Victoria network which has stations in the smaller regional areas of nearby Ballarat, as well as Bendigo, Latrobe Valley, Shepparton and Albury-Wodonga. Mr Bell says metropolitan stations would not provide their programming to a competing service, and it was unlikely that a Geelong-based news bulletin for the local 250,000 population. The Australian Broadcasting Authority is said to be likely to this week invite expressions of interest to set up a local service, similar to the Newcastle and Wollongong stations.

* DAVID LECKIE'S TCN-9 has Manly and the North Shore as targets in its local paper ads for Changing Rooms. 'Do you have a room in your house which needs a makeover? We'll provide the budget, professional designers, and a handyman. All you need to do is find a friend or relative to change rooms with.'

Quadrant is not a journal of record for the establishment but, rather, a journal which is devoted to making the establishment - the new establishment of this present confused age - accountable. - Jeff Shaw QC, former NSW Attorney General. * ZOE STIRLING, Editor of The Southern Peninsula Local, has seen her paper had a complaint upheld by the Australian Press Council. TERRY GODDARD, Deputy Controller of the Sorrento Unit of the Victorian State Emergency Service, as a private citizen, complained after The Local reported that a 'new bid' had been made to discredit the Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad. 'It appears to be common currency in the district that there are long-standing disputes between the two emergency services.' Mr Goddard complained that the newspaper's assertions relating to the SES were without foundation and harmful. The newspaper offered Mr Goddard an opportunity to reply by away of letter to the editor. He elected not to take that course considering that it did not offer adequate redress. Air Waves

* BRADY HALLS and MD PAUL HODGES were having a lengthy on-air chat with Halls' wife when we gave a test tune to www.talkaustralia.com.au this past week. The net station has IAN LESLIE, LOCHIE DADDO and LARRY EDMUR, but from what we heard it won't have many listeners. An on-air shocker - this week's bronze borer.

* However, LEIGH DREW, 3AK mid-yawner, takes the gold for his boring camp radio act with guest BLAIR EDGAR - both pretending to be women. Back to automation?

TV Guide

* HELEN CROWN, MORGAN O'NEIL , NICOLA GREAVES and ANH DO are the on-screen team for Rush TV, debuting at 12 Midnight, later today (Monday) on Channel 7. He is accused of failing 'to fully explain the real budgetary situation and its implications for news and current affairs'. A vote of confidence was put in News and Current Affairs Director MAX UECHRITZ and Deputy JOHN CAMERON. PETER WILMOTH of The Age reports that staff believe that the ABC is being 'deeply harmed' by current management policies.

* Meanwhile, JONATHAN SHIER is attacking commercial television, which he says needs to do more than show how to redesign bathrooms and back yards.

* ROWAN FORSTER, ABC Melbourne radio fixture of 22 years, is featured in a GEORGINA JERUMS profile in this week's Melbourne Weekly Magazine. JENNIFER BYRNE was similarly featured the previous week.

* MICHAEL GORDON, National Editor at The Age, has won two major awards at the United Nations Association of Australia's Media Peace awards, following his reconciliation series earlier this year. The judges described the articles as 'the closest thing to a masterpiece of the kind of work the UN media peace awards sought to recognise'. Other Age recipients included CLAIRE MILLER and PAMELA BONE.

* 'BIG KEV', the household cleaning goods spruiker who made his name on BERT NEWTON'S Good Morning Australia (Ten Network), is now selling his goods through supermarkets. We know because we saw the ad on the Seven Network. By the way, 'Big Kev' used to tell us that if his GMA segments appeared near the 9am start of the program, his telephone lines would be swamped. The closer to 11am, the fewer number of 1-800 calls.

Smaller Names Dept.

* TIM LANE, ABC sports broadcaster, was MC at last Wednesday's dinner in Victoria, to honor newsagents. The Age event included Guest Speaker, Fairfax CEO FRED HILMER.

The Local Report

* NEIL COLLYER, Victorian State Manager of Fairfax Community Newspapers (Vic.), is rumored to have referred Independent News MD FELIX GANDER'S front-page disparaging personal comments, to Fairfax lawyers. The pair are publicly squabbling over FCN's Flier circulation figures, as compared to Gander's Independent Group.

* GENE SWINSTEAD'S Cumberland Newspapers (NSW) can take a bow for the biggest local supplement we've seen for a while: an 80-page color tabloid for WALTER MacGREGOR'S celebration 40 years of his family's Hardware & General businesses in Brookvale, Peakhurst and Marayong.

* MICHAEL RAY, proprietor of Mansfield's High Country Times (Vic.), hits a record this Wednesday with a record 44-page issue of his free weekly. It includes seven pages of real estate, and a High Country Festival feature. Meanwhile, opposition Editor PHIL NOLAN scooped the pool at the Victorian Country Press Association awards. We've written to VCPA CEO JANICE RAY earlier this year for VCPA results ... no reply to date.

* WILLIAM VERITY, Editor of the Fairfield City Champion (NSW), uses 220-point headlines to point out a 'Split!' between local One Nation man ROD SMITH, and PAULINE HANSON. Can any other Aussie local beat this size headline for a regular news item? Meanwhile News Limited's Fairfield Advance is publishing 'house ads' promoting its 56,000 local circulation - 'first with the local news every Tuesday'.

* ALBERT MARTINEZ, Editor of Hills News (NSW), wins points for a his local front-page headline, about increased school funding: 'Hills Hoist'.

Glass House

* DICK SMITH, Australian adventurer, seems to have become a writer for JACK PACHOLLI'S Toorak Times: 'I was very pleased when the Toorak Times rang and asked if I would like to contribute an article,' this week's article says. 'I love Toorak and often walk through the Toorak area when I'm in Melbourne.' Writing for the likes of Pacholli ... now we know why Smith's matches have the brand name of 'Dickheads'.

* MICHAEL RAFFERTY'S AARDS (Australian Advertising Rate and Data Service) web site has its Bulletin page for subscribers to keep abreast of media news. Our check on Monday lists: '23/9/2000 to 23/10/2000. No bulletin items to list.' We'll stick with Media Flash thanks.

Editor's E-Mail

* PETER YAMANI, peteryamani@hotmail.com, writes - literals, fraud and all: 'My name is Mr Peter Yamani. I am the Personal Assistant to our former Head of State. During his regime I was his confidant and was able to know the wereabout of most of his looted sums and money. I am being investigated by our new government and as such I will require your assistance to help facilitate the safe keeping of a large amount of money in my care. Please for security reasons keep this matter with utmost confidentiality for our mutual benefit. I await your urgent response.'

His writings appeared in The Bulletin's monthly Lone Hand, The Age, The Argus, The Sydney Morning Herald, the Sydney Sun, and Melbourne's Sun News-Pictorial. If you can find a copy, well worth the read.

* RAMONA KOVAL risks being regarded as taking herself more seriously than she should. Sure, she is passionate about the ABC, but look her final par in The Weekend Australian: 'The question is not: Why is Ramona being courageous? but: How can someone stand by and watch this great public institution be torn apart without a fight?'

* 'BY INVITATION ONLY' at the launch, 7.30pm tomorrow (Tues.), of The Age Good Bars Guide at 'Khokalat', Basement, 43 Hardware Lane, Melbourne. STEVE BERRY, Magazines and Books Manager, The Age, has been in charge of this second production.

* GEORGE 'DUBBYA' BUSH'S website is worth a visit ... it refines visitors to state-by-state local pages, and includes TV footage. www.georgewbush.com

* JACK HERMAN, Executive Secretary of the Australian Press Council, fired an E-salvo off to us that the announcement of its new Chairman-Designate KEN McKINNON'S appointment was published at the APC'S website, hidden in 'GPR 242' whatever that is. Herman's communication would have been more timely had it been sent to us before we went to press! Meanwhile, we'd like to see the Council submit itself to some form of authority to sometimes judge its own conduct and adjudications. It seems to answer to no-one.

* KEN McKINNON told DOUG AITON, 3AK, this week that he wants to see a departure from the Press Council adjudications, as they are presently written by the Secretariat. He believes they should be written a journalist in a more newsworthy style.

Going Rates

* DR DAVID KEMP is Federal Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs. He seeks to appoint a Ministerial Adviser, based in either Melbourne or Canberra. Going rate is $54,838 - $73,752, plus $12,180 allowance. jim.barron@detya.gov.au

* $38,207 - $40,206 is offered for an Electorate Media/Research Officer position with a Labor Federal Member in Brisbane. GPO Box 128, Brisbane, 4001.

* $39,145 - $45,920 is going rate for a Journalist - Public Affairs Officer Grade 1 position offered by DALE STARR, Manager, Public Affairs, Environment Australia.

Media Money

* RENE RIVKIN'S rules are summarised in a new edition by NIGEL LITTLEWOOD. SYRIE WONGKAEW, at Information Australia, says the reprint of the 1999 book has an extra 45 pages of further detailed explanations of some of his favorite investment strategies. Littlewood says: 'At $20, how can you not afford a copy of Mr Rivkin's investment rules? He's the best, I've modelled my trading system on his rules and it works ... I am proof.'

* NICK RENTON is publishing an updated edition of The Australian Dividend Handbook through MICHAEL WILKINSON'S information Australia, with a RRP of $43.95. More than 350 major public companies and smaller listing shows full details of each company including dividends, share bonus plans, reinvestment plans and share top-up plans.

Bottom Line

* 29,673 is the Victorian circulation of The Australian, according to internal staff documents at The Age. The Spencer Street broadsheet lost 4.9 per cent Saturday sales in the latest audit, and The Sunday Age was down 1.72 per cent.

* $140 MILLION: the price paid by Austar United's JOHN PORTER to gain the metropolitan spectrum of MIKE BOULOU'S Television and Radio Broadcasting, to gain a bargain basement entry into a market dominated to date by Foxtel and Cable and Wireless Optus.

* $US6 BILLION: backing secured by STEVE COSSER to take on Telstra's copper telco network in Australia with a wirelss application. 'This is the fattest pipe of wireless local loop offered anywhere in the world,' he told FINOLA BURKE of The Australian.

The Last Word

* PETER McGAURAN, Federal Minister for the Arts, is one of the guests debating 'Can The Arts Reach Beyond The Converted?', an Age public forum being held tonight (Mon. Oct. 30) at the Plaza Ballroom, Regent Theatre, 191 Collins Street, Melbourne. More than 400 people are expected to attend. Other speakers include JONATHAN MILLS, Artistic Director, Melbourne Festival; ADRIAN COLLETTE, CEO, Opera Australia; CHRIS McAULIFFE, Director, Ian Potter Museum; DEB VERHOEVEN, Director, Australian Film Institute; BARRIE KOSKY, Theatre and Opera Director.

P.S.

* LORETTA TOLNAI says school newspapers now have their own version of the Walkley Awards, according to the Fairfield City Champion (NSW). Entries will be accepted until November 8 for the School Newspaper Awards 2000 in the Sydney Morning Herald.

A Long Story - Part 10

* ASH LONG reflects on the various people who have influenced his media career.

* THE MOTT FAMILY easily finish as the most honorable media family with whom I have dealt. Chief amongst their rank was Leader Newspapers Chairman ROBERT ('R.R.') MOTT and his nephew, Deputy Chairman and Publisher JOHN ('J.H.') MOTT. The family, under patriarch DECIMUS ('D.H.') MOTT, had arrived in Melbourne from Albury in 1924 to take over the Northcote Leader paid weekly newspaper. Already, the family had already notched a proud 70-year history in Australian newspapers.

* Londoner GEORGE MOTT had arrived in Australia in the 1850's, and after journalistic work with The Argus, expanded to country Victoria, including interests at Albury-Wodonga, where a branch of the family still conducts The Border Mail today.

* R. LEMON and the REV. A.H. HENRY RICHARDSON established The Northcote Leader and District Record on January 21, 1888: 'We ask the forbearance of our readers for the very small amount of local news,' they remarked. 'This is owing to our arrangements being yet incomplete. We hope in our next and subsequent issues to present our readers with a full budget of local intelligence'. Within two years, R.J. and J.S. WHALLEY have taken over the penny-broadsheet boasting the 'Largest Circulation and Best Advertising in the Northern Suburbs'. As the 36-page May 1933 Jubilee Special Issue stated: 'Their beginnings were small, the paper having no great circulation and little advertising support. With all the energy and ability they could command, the new proprietary set themselves out to improve and popularise the paper, and it was not long before they had the pleasure of seeing their efforts b

* DECIMUS MOTT had split with Albury members of his family in 1924, to purchase The Leader. From humble beginnings, the family were to develop Australia's largest privately-owned local newspaper company. In 1928, they acquired The Advertiser in the outer suburban Diamond Valley. Throughout the 30's, they purchased the competing Preston Progress, expanded to Whittlesea, and spread with takeovers of existing mastheads in Brunswick and Coburg. In 1936, the company absorbed the local free Budget newspaper produced by local traders, converting their 2d weekly to a free home delivery publication.

* JOHN MOTT provided a steady hand at the Leader tiller, along with father GEORGE ('G.H.') MOTT - until his untimely death; Chairman BOB ('R.R.') MOTT; and Editorial Director WALTER ('W.T.') MOTT. Other family members entered the business: Commercial Printing Director WALTER ('W.H.') MOTT; Company Secretary ANTHONY MOTT; and Production Director ROBERT ('R.S.') MOTT.

* Yet the family was also progressive in enlisting 'outside' assistance to manage its growth, as it did in inviting employees as shareholders: DAVID TOMLIN became Operations Manager, with a high involvement in the Leader Engraving Co.; the late MARK CRAMPTON was an earlier Production Director; and KEITH OSTLER also heavily involved in the production of a chain of more than 20 weekly publications.

* LAWRIE BIRKETT was head of the printers on the giant 'Hoe' line; PERC THORLEY and DENIS BLANDFORT managed pre-production; BILL CUST was Editor-in-Chief; and ERIC GREY supervised an army of 3000 distributors.

* GRAEME TRAINOR led the Leader Advertising Sales team, backed by the colorful BRIAN GOLDSWORTHY, and involving long-time newspaper salesman such as Classifieds boss NORM BRENNAN; real estate chief KEVIN KING; commercial specialist GARY McGUIRE; retail man BRIAN WHITE; and senior ad men LEO HART, BASIL HASLAM and IAN MUSGROVE.

* THE MOTT FAMILY were different because they lived in the communities that they served. Apart from doing business, they genuinely believed in a role of civic service from themselves and their newspapers. GEORGE MOTT was a Mayor of Preston. JOHN MOTT and BOB MOTT were prominent Rotarians, as were a number of their Directors. WALTER MOTT was a prominent Lion, and WALTER MOTT JNR active in the running of the Whittlesea Agricultural Society. MARK CRAMPTON was instrumental in the building of the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital. And the list goes on. What made THE MOTT FAMILY most honorable in my view, was that genuinely believed in civic duty and an ethic of being of local service. (Perhaps the closest to that these days is the Rural Press country NSW newspapers of JOHN B. FAIRFAX, and the Bankstown-Canterbury Torch Group led by JOHN ENGISCH).

THE CAREER TRAIN

"Get your career on track - catch the career train!"

Sara Lee, the Australian Defence Force and mycareer.com.au are aboard - the world's first ever Career Train is set to run from October 31 to November 14, 2000.

The fully branded train will be launched at a full 'media viewing' at 10.00 am, on Platforms 1W Flinders Street Station, Tuesday October 31. After the viewing, the train will run on Connex's normal schedule throughout their network (Glen Waverley line, Belgrave line, Lilydale line, Hurstbridge line, Alamein line & Epping line) for the two weeks.

CLIFF STONEMAN, Director of Dunhill Recruitment, the organisation behind the 'career train' concept explains: "This is part of the Jobs Marathon initiative. The Train has been fully branded with advertising employment messages from Sara Lee, the Australian Defence Force and mycareer.com.au. These companies and Connex are also major exhibitors at the Jobs Marathon 2000, which has become the largest community spirited employment event in Australia this year.

"We came up with the idea of a career train to shock people - the general community and potential employees. All we want commuters to think, when the train pulls up at their normal platform, is: 'Why are these companies doing this? I thought we had an unemployment problem?" he says.

According to Flight Lieutenant ROSS JONES, The Career Train is a unique opportunity for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to raise the profile of the career opportunities currently available on a full-time and part-time basis.

"We have numerous vacancies in the Army, Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Positions range from Pilots, Engineers, Doctors, Infantry Officers, Air Defence Officers and Seaman Officers, through to Aircraft Technicians, Marine Technicians, Combat Systems Operators and Tank Drivers.

"Recently we extended the closing date for applications to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), so we would love to hear from anyone who would like to have their degree paid for and join the ADF as an Officer. We are also looking for anyone who is interested in going to Royal Military College (RMC) Duntroon to become an Army Officer," says Flight Lieutenant Jones.

JOHN WALSH, Training and Organisational Development Officer at Connex says the organisation is proud to facilitate this exciting world first initiative as it gives businesses an opportunity to showcase a range of employment opportunities.

"Connex also has its own employment campaign underway. We have 43 vacancies for 'Safe Travel Staff', a new position to create a safer environment for our customers.

"When hiring, we look for people who have good communication skills, are team players, flexible, professional, well presented and dedicated. The unique benefits Connex can offer employees include free public transport travel and the opportunity to advance within the organisation," he says.

Sara Lee believes the Career Train and the Jobs Marathon is a unique way for people to find out more about their company

"Sara Lee Household & Body Care is a new name for a company that has been operating in Melbourne for almost 100 years. Everyone knows our brands - but not many people know the great company behind those brands," says STEPHEN GOODEY, Managing Director, Sara Lee Household & Body Care.

"Our hope is that the Career Train is impactful and really gets commuter attention. If they read our company name, then see our brands, we hope the response will be 'Sara Lee..I didn't know they did all that'

"While there are no immediate staffing requirements, we want people who are interested in a sales or marketing career to think about joining us. When hiring we look for people who have a positive attitude, want results and are team players," says Mr Goodey.

The message the Career Train will carry for mycareer.com.au is - It's my life. It's mycareer.com.au. MIKE WILKINSON, National Marketing Manager, f2, Fairfax Interactive Network explains, "As mycareer.com.au is one of Australia's leading career management sites, we felt it was important to take part in this world first opportunity.

"Hopefully people will be significantly intrigued to visit mycareer.com.au and discover the range of career management tools and information that we have to offer. They can search through more than 30,000 online job advertisements, create a resume, read the latest employment news or even view videos of industry mentors."

According to Mr Wilkinson, over the next year mycareer.com.au will be looking for new people in the areas of Business Development, Technology, Marketing, Sales and Management.

"Aside from specific job related skills and experience, new personnel would be appropriate if they have passion for the Internet, enjoy working in teams and within a fast paced, constantly evolving environment.
