BREAKING NEWS

Charges Over Jail Interview Dismissed

* JOHN ANDERSEN, senior Townsville Bulletin reporter, has had charges over interviewing three female prisoners without permission, dropped in Townsville Magistrates Court on Thursday. ANDERSEN, 48, was charged with three counts of interviewing inmates without the permission of the Department of Corrective Services. ROBERT REID of The Courier-Mail says the charges were dismissed on technical grounds, 'including a prisoner's constitutional right to free speech'. Bully Editor JOHN AFFLECK said ANDERSEN had not entered the jail but had merely answered the phone at his desk and followed up the story. 'John took the call and did what he had to do as a journalist and found himself in court.'

MULLER registered the address last year to market a range of digital TV set-top boxes. Long Shots

By Ash Long, Publisher, Media Flash

* WE'RE IMPRESSED. The Olympic decision to award the 2008 Games to Beijing was set to be announced about 1am Saturday. The yarn appeared front-page in The Australian and Herald Sun on Saturday morning ... with Page 4 of Saturday's Daily Telegraph devoted to the decision.

* Is JACK WATERFORD'S Canberra Times 'dumbing down'? Saturday's Page 3 included a column devoted to actors RUSSELL CROWE and NICOLE KIDMAN in Fiji; a 'rumour' that tennis players ANDRE AGASSI and STEFFI GRAF are to marry; an AAP lift about CHRISTOPHER SKASE; and a pix of GOUGH WHITLAM at his 85th birthday celebration.

* ERIC BEECHER'S Text Media Group was set to take over some of PMP's 33 magazine titles, until KERRY STOKES closed the deal, according to DAMON KITNEY'S AFR piece. KERRY STOKES acknowledges his RM Williams partner, KEN COWLEY (former PMP Chairman) was useful: 'STOKES says while COWLEY wasn't involved in this transaction and 'we chose not to get him involved', he concedes 'we had spoken previously on how Seven could form a strategic alliance with their magazine side'. The Seven Board includes former PMP magazine head DULCIE BOLING, and Seven Melbourne boss DAVID ASPINALL (former West Australian Newspapers CEO).

* IAN MEIKLE will head the PMP-Seven joint venture. MEIKLE was Canberra Times MD, when the paper was owned by STOKES. Going Rates

* MEDIA FLASH has a golden rule that Australian TV and radio people's pay packages are usually doubled, even trebled, in media reports. Crikey's STEPHEN MAYNE puts EDDIE McGUIRE'S Herald Sun Saturday column pay packet at $100,000. MAYNE puts NEIL MITCHELL'S 3AW annual package at $500,000. We have no reason to depart from relying on our golden rule.

* 114 VOTES: latest number of votes picked up by the Crikey - People Party in the Aston by-election.

Bottom Line

* 200,000 LISTENERS: 6IX and 6PR are missing out this number of listeners in their Perth market-place because of the WA capital's sandy soil, according to papers lodged by parent company Southern Cross Broadcasting to the Australian Broadcasting Authority. They want FM frequencies, reports AMT Online Radio Industry Newsletter.

The Last Word

* STEVE ROBINSON, 3MP General Manager, has told The Frankston Standard (Vic.) his radio station is not about to end its 25-year association with the station, following its sale to DCL. 'No decision has been made. There are a number of things to be discussed, we'll maintain our presence in Frankston, no question about our presence in Frankston. There are some facets of the operation which may move. But we're just looking at back-office functions. But even with that, no decision has been made. The sale of the station to Data and Commerce Ltd (which also acquired 3AK earlier this year) hasn't even been finalised yet. It will finalised at the end of July.'

P.S.

* BRIAN DIMBLEBY writes: 'I dont know if you can help me but its worth a chance. My father, who has been a journalist in South Africa and New Zealand for many years, has been trying to contact a friend, also a journalist and an author, who worked in South Africa and Australia. His name is JACK BENNETT and Dad last had contact with him in Sydney several years ago where he was working in T.V. ournalism,I think. He authored several books and last lived in Sydney. He should be retired now and may have retired to Queensland somewhere where he used to have a holiday home. Any information or help will be gratefully appreciated.' brian.dimbleby@ecan.govt.nz
